The Marañón River is a major tributary of the Upper Amazon, only a few miles from the confluence of the Río Ucayali. It begins high in the Andes mountains and flows northward toward the Amazon Basin, where it becomes one of the great tributaries of the Amazon River. Taken a few hours' journey by car and boat from Iquitos, Peru, this photograph captures the river as it meanders through a vast expanse of untouched forest beneath a sky filled with shifting midday clouds.
