At dawn beside Caramarca Lake in the Cordillera Huayhuash, an orange tent glows softly against the stillness of the alpine morning. This photograph captures the moment of anticipation before the day’s ascent toward Rasac Pass, where the trail climbs steadily over a snowy glacier to over 5000 meters. Caramarca Lake is one of my favorite places in all of Peru. Camping at the lake with the impressive south face of Nevado Rasac in the background ignites my imagination. One only arrives at this lake after ascending the most difficult pass of the alpine circuit. It is truly a reward for a tough day’s work.
